Coffee enthusiasts must remember to use 'softened water' with these machines because hard water might damage the mechanism inside. It is highly recommended to run this machine with water at least 25% full in the sight glass or else the heating element might get damaged as well.

The water in the boiler is specific for the boiler's use only. The water to make coffee, however, comes from the reservoir and passes through a pipe in the bottom boiler for flash heating. Cold water passing through this pipe will cause a change in temperature for the boiler water. The water level should always be kept in a moderate level. The water level in the sight glass will only change when the steamer is used or when the red button on the left of the base is depressed and held to refill the boiler.

A great safety feature of this machine is that upon initial startup, when water is not pumped into the boiler, the safety kicks off and the machine has to be reset. On the bottom of the machine underneath the yellow cap there is a reset button for the safety thermostat.
