Gold Coffee Filters. Time to make the switch?

Gold tone coffee filters are becoming increasingly popular with coffee enthusiasts these days. These gold tone filters provided by names such as Braun, Black and Decker, Krups, and Swiss Gold commonly have new users describing a definite ‘brighter’, ‘livelier’, or ‘more complex’ flavor in their brews. So, is it time to make the switch from disposable paper coffee filters to the permanent gold coffee filter? Read on and decide for yourself.

What is a gold tone filter?

A gold tone filter is a permanent coffee filter made of stainless steel that is enhanced with gold plating. This layer of gold ensures that no metallic taste is imparted to your coffee. Additionally, since gold tone filters can be used over and over, they eliminate the need for paper filter replacements, lasting users several years. If you want to spend the extra money, Swiss Gold even makes coffee filters of pure 23 karat gold, which will last you even longer.

Water Filtering For Espresso Machines

If you own an espresso machine, but don’t use a water filter or decalcify, now may be a good time to start, especially if you want your espresso machine to live a long and fulfilling life. Why? Well, mainly because tap water is full of minerals, metals, and other contaminants, namely calcium. Over time, calcium accumulates in your machine’s pipelines and water tank, things get clogged AND there are always the ingredients in your coffee that you never asked for. If you decalcify your machine regularly, at least you’ll get rid of some of the calcium that’s built up, but you are still drinking unfiltered tap water.

When it comes to preserving your machine, the difference between using water filters and decalcifying, or descaling, your machine is purely a matter of personal preference. Using a filter means you won’t need to decalcify your machine, and vice versa. But, some people forget that, next to the beans, water is the next most important ingredient to an excellent cup of coffee. They’d tell you that tap water and bottled water are essentially the same, but anyone with taste buds would highly dispute that. Yes, the water is refined and minerals are added, but try some of that bottled stuff from any mountain spring, and I guarantee you’ll taste the difference. But realistically speaking, any espresso machine owner knows that it’s a hassle to fill the water tank day after day. Let’s not have all that effort go to waste by making coffee with sub-par tasting water.
