How Coffee Cherries Become Coffee Beans
Once coffee berries (or cherries) have been harvested, the outer portion of the fruit must be removed to produce the green coffee beans. There are two methods commonly used: wet processing and dry processing. Multi-step wet processing is more expensive, but it results in higher quality coffee. It is the method that is generally used in South America and parts of Africa. The slideshow below illustrates the process.

Research by the Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers found that 75 percent of espresso/cappuccino machine owners had bought them in the last year, and that 57 percent said they were using them to save money over coffee-shop prices, spokeswoman Jill Notini said.
Resisting those $3 lattes saves $1,000 per year, she said. Which is enough to buy the most expensive espresso maker on the market.
