Growth in Home Espresso Machines

gaggiasteelDespite the impacts of the financial downturn, Australians are making sure they still get their daily coffee fix.

In order to cut costs and still enjoy cafe quality coffee, some consumers are purchasing home espresso machines.

Kathleen Kelly, a student at the University of Queensland, said that while she enjoyed the taste of coffee, buying coffee at cafes was too expensive for students.

“I never realised how much I used to spend on going out for coffee,” she said.

“When we got the home espresso machine I decided to have friends over instead of going out. It saves everyone money!”

While to some it may seem expensive to buy a home espresso machine, the savings can be significant if you are a regular coffee drinker.

As well as significant financial savings, the growth in home espresso machines may also be due to an increase in the sophistication of Australian consumers’ tastes.

BIS Foodservices ‘Coffee in Australia’ report pronounced that “over the last decade the Italian coffee culture or concept has swept the world”.

Nowhere is that more true than in Australia, which has an evolving coffee industry.

Over the last decade the number of coffees drunk by Australians has increased by 65 per cent- more than a billion cups of coffee are drunk in Australian cafes, restaurants and other outlets every year.

The increased sophistication of Australian coffee consumers’ tastes is evident in the growth of the pure coffee market.

This indicates that more consumers are choosing pure coffee products over instant coffee.

Home coffee machines can save consumers money while giving them the cafe coffee experience at home- and Australian consumers are getting in on the trend.
