Descaling your espresso machine is effortless and effective when you utilize products that are customized for your particular type of machine. It wasn’t long ago that vinegar was the desired chemical for cleaning coffee and espresso machines. More recently, our coffee appliances have become more sophisticated and efficient. Thus, requiring a descaling agent that would effectively remove the mineral build-up on the water boiler and tank, while protecting the appliance from caustic odors and undesirable toxic chemicals. It is also important to use a product that is safe and non-toxic for human consumption.
Different espresso machines require different descaling techniques and products to do the job. You will find decalcifying agents in liquid, tablet, and powder forms. Different Manufacturers recommend different forms of descaling products, but basically the goal is all the same. You want to remove the scale using a chemical that is placed in the water reservoir so it can be taken up into the boiler and tubes that deliver the boiling water. As the chemical soaks inside the machine, it cleans the build-up.
With all espresso machines, the goal is to put the correct concentration of descaler into the water reservoir and run the product through all tanks and tubes. If you are using tablets, you must first dissolve the tablets completely before running the descale cycle. This takes only a few minutes and is actually fun to watch. When water mixes with the tablet you will witness an entertaining show of fuzzing, bubbles, and “water dancing”, as I like to call it.
